How long is the trail?
The hike is 2.0 miles round trip (about 1 mile each way). Most visitors spend 60–90 minutes including photo stops.
What’s the trail difficulty?
Generally rated moderate: steady uphill on a paved grade with ~500 ft / 152 m elevation gain; no stairs; exposed to sun and wind.
What are the Trail hours?
Access follows the park gate schedule (earlier close in winter, later in summer). Always check the gate sign on arrival and plan to exit before closing. If you’re targeting sunrise or sunset, time your visit accordingly.
Is there a cost for the Trail?
Free. There’s no entrance fee.
Do I need reservations or tickets?
No reservations or tickets are required for the trail or lookouts.
Where do I park?
There’s a single paved, free parking lot directly off Kalanianaʻole Hwy (Hwy 72) at the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline entrance. It’s first-come, first-served.
When is parking easiest?
Early morning and late afternoon are the smoothest. Mid-morning to early afternoon fills fastest, especially on weekends, holidays, and during whale season (Nov–May).
What’s the Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail address
The trailhead is inside Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline off Kalanianaʻole Hwy (Hwy 72) near Makapuʻu Beach and Sea Life Park. In maps, search “Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trailhead.” (Note: No numbered street address.)
What are the directions from Waikīkī/Honolulu?
Drive H-1 east → it becomes Kalanianaʻole Hwy (Hwy 72) → pass Hawaiʻi Kai, Hanauma Bay, and Sandy Beach → follow signs for Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline / Makapuʻu Point. From the Windward side, come south via Waimānalo on Hwy 72.
Are there restrooms or water at the trail?
No. There are no restrooms or water on the trail – arrive prepared.
Can I go down to the Makapuʻu tide pools?
No. That area is closed and hazardous due to steep, loose access and unpredictable surf. Stay on the paved trail.
What’s the best time to visit?
For comfort and parking, early morning or late afternoon. For whales, Nov–May (peak Jan–Mar). Always confirm day-of gate hours at the entrance.
Are dogs allowed?
Dogs on leash are permitted. Please pack out waste and carry water—there’s no shade or fountains.
Is the trail stroller-friendly / wheelchair-friendly?
The surface is paved and stair-free; many families push jogging strollers. The sustained grade and wind can be challenging; some wheelchair users enjoy portions of the trail with assistance. Use your comfort level and turn around anytime – the views start early.
